Examined Life Scholars

The Examined Life Scholars program provides a meaningful two-week summer experience focused on studying the liberal arts for Waco-area high school students, particularly those who are first-generation college-bound, and connects them with mentors from Baylor’s Honors College who support them throughout the following academic year. The 2026 program will take place June 7–18 on Baylor’s campus.

What is Examined Life Scholars?

In partnership with Baylor’s Honors College and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the Examined Life Scholars program, funded by the Teagle Foundation’s Knowledge for Freedom Initiative, introduces local, first-generation college-bound high school students to the liberal arts and campus life. Students live on Baylor’s campus for two weeks before their senior year, studying Plato and Aristotle alongside contemporary writers while exploring questions about education, purpose, and citizenship. Events hosted by Campus Living & Learning and Student Engagement offer participants a full picture of social and cultural life at a university. Faculty-led seminars and activities help students develop critical thinking, communication, and decision-making skills that prepare them for college success. Throughout their senior year, Honors College mentors continue meeting monthly with the students to guide them through the college application process.

“I’m not naturally good at reading or rhetoric, but this program made me realize these are incredible skills to cultivate. I have found joy in learning with other people. I’ve made friends, I’ve learned so much, and I’ve started to think differently about what I want to do in the future.”
